Evaluation: Question 7

This is he powerpoint made for Question 7

Evaluation: Question 2

Q2) How does your media product represent particular social groups?

What is representation?

There are seven areas of representation:
  • Age- How young or old you are.
  • Gender- Behaviour as a male or female. Gender is socially constructed through school, family,TV and media and religion.
  • Ability and Disability-When you are less able to do something than someone else is(physically or mentally/when you are prevented from doing something.
  • Regional identity- The notion that part of a persons identity is rooted not only in the country but also in the region they live in/ a sense of belonging.
  • Ethnicity- Common social groups/backgrounds/ nationality/'where your from'.
  • Sexuality- A persons sexual orientation or preference/ capacity for sexual feelings/ The condition of being characterised and distinguished by your sex.
  • Social class/status- People who have to same social or educational status, e.g.'The working class'.

In our thriller 'The Last Detail' we have represented gender. We have challenged the stereotype that women are the victims in films and men are the villains. In our film we have a male librarian being stalked by an unknown female.
Some examples of real media that challenge the stereotype that women are the victims in films are 'Taken 2'. The main male protagonist in the film is kidnapped with his wife, and he has to try and save them both. This challenges the stereotype because you would expect the woman to be the only one who is kidnapped.

Some other examples of real media products that challenge the stereotype that women are the victims in films are 'Play Misty for me' and 'Fatal Attraction'.

'Play Misty for me' is a 1971 American psychological thriller film about a woman who has a personality disorder stalks a radio presenter. She frequently phones the radio station, turns up at his favourite bar and watches him at home. She wants to be with this man and doesn't let anything stop her. Here is the trailer; it shows the woman  and her split personality:

'Fatal Attraction' is a 1987 American psychological thriller. The film centers around a married man who has a weekend affair with a woman who refuses to allow it to end, resulting in emotional blackmail, stalking, and an ensuing obsession on her part. Here is the trailer:

We have represented gender in a positive and negative way in our thriller film. We have represented women is a positive light. We are trying to give out the message that women are not always in need of help or need to be saved from a situation, but instead they can take charge and be in control of a situation. We have represented men in a negative light. We have showed our male protagonist running away from something and stealing. However we have also portrayed men is a positive light. We are trying to give out the message that men sometimes need saving too and can sometimes get them selfs into bad situations which they need saving from.

We decided to challenge the representation of gender because we wanted to create something new, something that audience's are not used to seeing. We wanted to get them thinking about the representations of men and women. By having the victim be a male we achieved this. We know this through audience feedback; our audience liked the fact we challenged the stereotype and said it made them want to keep watching.

Evaluation - question 6

Evaluation- Question 7.

Q7) Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product?

Through completing both productions, i have learnt a great deal. The preliminary task we really beneficial to me as i made quite a few mistakes which i have learnt from. For example in my prelim i did not have titles or a sound track. If i had not done this in my final thriller film i would have lost marks so i am glad i made the mistake in my prelim rather than my thriller film. I have gained many new skills through completing both productions, such as how to properly frame my work, how to apply the rule of three, how to create a sound track and much more! I have enjoyed making my prelim and thriller film and i have learnt a lot from doing it.
